At the end of July, we completed our final fundraising mission to support children’s charity Wirral Camp!
Four brave people from Team Yozu successfully abseiled down the side of Liverpool’s towering Anglican Cathedral!
What is Wirral Camp?
Wirral Camp is a local scheme that organises a week’s adventure holiday in North Wales for disadvantaged kids. The Camp is run entirely by volunteers and offers a fantastic range of activities, from arts and crafts to canoeing and Nerf games.
The holiday camp brings together children from different schools, neighbourhoods and backgrounds too.
It’s all about fostering friendships, teamwork, and resilience. The Camp organisers want these youngsters to push their boundaries, try new things, and, most importantly, just be kids, regardless of any challenges they may face.
This year, we aimed to raise at least £ 2,000 to support the event! 🎯We managed to smash that target during our campaign, so our stretch goal was set at £4k!
How Support Can Make a Difference
Our aim is simple: we want to help raise funds to enable these kids to build confidence, learn new skills, and have a blast together and it’s amazing how even the smallest donations can make a difference.
- £4 would pay for a Wirral Camp T-shirt for a child
- £10 would pay for a child’s entrance to an indoor fun centre
- £20 would pay for a child’s food for the day
- £50 would pay for an activity with a qualified instructor such as canoeing, abseiling, cave exploring or gorge walking
- £100 would pay for two days of the holiday for a child
- £335 would provide a carnival day for the children including a giant inflatable ‘foam world’
Abseil Day
On a sunny afternoon in Liverpool, four fearless members of the Yozu team – Chris, Kirsty, Justyn, and Ian – took on a challenge like no other: abseiling 150ft down the West Gate of Liverpool’s iconic Anglican Cathedral.
The weather was perfect, the skyline was stunning, and the nerves? Understandably real. Liverpool Cathedral – the largest in Britain (and fifth most prominent in the world) – provided both a breathtaking view and a seriously high starting point.
Sense of Achievement
“I felt a mixture of excitement and apprehension,” said Chris. “I hadn’t done it (an abseil) for a long time and never from anything approaching that height, but I knew staying composed was the best way to make it a safe and enjoyable experience. I felt elated afterwards… the adrenaline was still flowing, and I had a sense of achievement and camaraderie with the other members of Yozu who went over the edge with me.”
Kirsty, who’d never abseiled before, added: “I’m not scared of heights and was totally calm… until I was asked to turn around, grab the scaffolding behind me, and look down at the 150ft drop and the view of Liverpool. That’s when the nerves really kicked in. But as soon as the instructor said, ‘Sit back, the ropes will hold you,’ the fear disappeared. Such a strange, incredible experience. Skydiving next year? That’s the plan!”
Chris also reflected on the view: “I remember not being too concerned when looking out across Liverpool, despite knowing full well that I was high up, but really feeling it when I did glance down. I was surprised at the extent of the difference between the two perspectives.”
With cheers from the crowd below and funds raised for a fantastic cause, it was a day of adrenaline, laughter, and team spirit. Not your average Saturday – and definitely not your average work event!
