Introducing Nicolas Hennick, our new Rails Engineer.

We have recently been expanding our development teams and we caught up with new starter Nicolas to share some things we didn’t know about him – including an incredible bucket list goal he wants to try!

What was your favourite childhood movie?

I played ice hockey until the age of 12 and The Mighty Ducks VHS was never too far from the player.

What is one item you couldn’t live without?

After travelling for a year, I realised there isn’t much that I really need but a warm sweater and a solid pair of shoes.

If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Steak & salad. Simple, tasty, never gets old to me!

If you were an animal, what kind would you be?

An eagle to stay up in the air for hours and see the world.

If you could have dinner with anybody in history, dead or alive, who would it be, and why?

I would love to sit with Marco Polo so he can tell me all about his adventures.

Marco Polo

What unusual or quirky things do you do regularly?

I read and watch anything and everything about airplanes. History, design, specs… I can spend the whole evening on a particular model without realising.

What’s your favourite movie?

Hard to choose but I will go for Once Upon a Time in America, Sergio Leone’s lesser known and underrated movie IMHO. I reckon it is not an easy movie to watch, but it has it all. Picture, music, plot, direction, actors – it is a masterpiece at every level!

If you were stranded on a desert island, what band or music would you want?

I would take a philharmonic orchestra so they can play me symphonies, ballets, operas but above all my favourite film scores from John Williams, Hans Zimmer and Ennio Morricone!

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

I was very lucky to go to Japan this year, which was on my list for a long time, but one day I want to cycle from London to Beijing.

What’s your biggest guilty pleasure?

Dipping Baiocchi biscuits in plain yogurt (Sorry Italy!). Don’t start, it’s a trap!

What’s the greatest challenge you overcame?

Changing career was a bold move. I left a comfortable situation working in Finance to try something new. I wanted to see if there was something else out there for me. I discovered coding a bit randomly, and I just loved it from the beginning. I like this feeling that at the end of the day I have built something (hopefully useful) that didn’t exist in the morning. Since then it’s been a lot of fun working in this industry.

How would you explain your Rails Engineer job to a 5-year-old?

I explain to the computer what to do. For example what button to display on the screen and what to do when someone clicks the button.
