Introducing Darren Jones, our new Rails Engineer.

We have recently been expanding our development teams and we caught up with new starter Darren us to share some things we didn’t know about him – including his dream to have dinner with The Terminator!

What was your favourite childhood movie?

The Never Ending Story – brilliant fantasy story with a flying dragon that looked like a dog. And I cried when the horse drowned in the quicksand (sorry for the spoiler). The song is great as well!

What is one item you couldn’t live without?

Moisturiser and hand cream… I use it every morning and night (and often during the day!)

If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Beyond Burgers – they’re meatier than the real meat versions!

If you were an animal, what kind would you be?

A dragon, but more like a Game of Thrones one rather than the furry dog one from Never Ending Story!

If you could have dinner with anybody in history, dead or alive, who would it be, and why?

Arnold Schwarzenegger… I loved watching his films growing up and would also want to get some weight lifting advice from him. He has a really interesting and useful daily email that I read.

Water Polo

What unusual or quirky things do you do regularly?

I play water polo for a team in Manchester… not sure if that’s quirky or not, but it’s a fairly weird game that involves grappling with people in water with hardly any clothes on in a funny hat

What’s your favourite movie?

Trainspotting – it’s funny, fast paced and emotional at times. The plot moves along quickly and the acting is great. And it has the best soundtrack of any movie.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what band or music would you want?

The Rocky IV soundtrack… I listen to it on repeat whenever I work out and it never fails to motivate me, so I’d listen to it while running along the beach and doing weight lifting with coconuts

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

The desert island from the last question sounds nice!

What’s your biggest guilty pleasure?

Eating loads of crisps… once I pop I can’t stop and can easily finish a full family-sized grab bag in one sitting!

What’s the greatest challenge you overcame?

Changing careers to become a software engineer at such a great place as Yozu after teaching maths for over 20 years – I’m really excited to get started!

How would you explain your Rails Engineer job to a 5-year-old?

I write the spells that computers use to make their magic
